Dear Mr. Pinkwater:

I have to say, working with you is a pleasure. A very strange pleasure, but a pleasure indeed.

– Your Publisher

Daniel replies:

I'm sorry, but publishers aren't allowed here. We have children using this forum, who need to be protected--and a wide variety of disordered personalities: people who think they are other people, or several people, or articles of furniture, or Bayonne, New Jersey. I believe we have some attorneys even. But a line must be drawn somewhere. If you feel the need to post, I suggest simonsays.com where no one will see it.

Hi Pinky,

I’ll admit I’m unpublished, but “Does that stop Funky Snowman? No!!” I think you’d like SUPERPANTS or MR. MCMOON AND THE SEVEN SWORDS OF DOOM, (episode 3 in a 9 part saga,… not really,) or maybe we could meet for a cup of pizza?

Daniel replies:

I'd rather have a slice of java. Anyone can be unpublished...but...are you unpublishable? Only then will I respect you.

Hi Pinky,

Okay, I’m gonna ask you again. Have you read “Mr. McMoon and the Seven Swords of Doom,” and if you haven’t , wouldn’t you like to?

Daniel replies:

No, and maybe.

Dear Mr. Pinkwater:

We are faithful listeners to CHINWAG THEATER Saturdays at 5 p.m. on WOI-AM (640) from nearby Ames, Iowa. As children’s book authors, we identify with your side-splitting, all-so-true AUTHORS DAY.

We wanted to praise your captivating co-host Charity Nebbe. We’ve met her, been interviewed by her and received the official CHINWAG lapelwear. We’d encourage you to post on your site a list of the 50-plus enlightened public radio stations which carry CHINWAG THEATER. More people should listen.

We’ve just devoured the cool, smooth and satisfying ICE CREAM LARRY. If Larry Bear ever wishes to visit Central Iowa, he’s welcome in our bathtub any time.

All best,

Thomas S. Owens

Diana Star Helmer

Daniel replies:

Charity Nebbe has bestowed upon you the official Chinwag Theater Lapelware? You are fortunate indeed. Nothing I can say would add to the honor you already bear.

Dear Mr. Rosenwasser, (or whatever)

I do hope you are still working on the Dada Ducks In Colitch, and haven’t just tucked it into a drawer somewhere, in a moment of O’Nielishness. It’s absolutely hilarious, and the first time I’ve seen you take on sex in any form (and please let it be noted that I am referring solely to your writing). It reminds me more of my days at U.C. Santa Cruz than I care to admit.

Sincerely,

Erich Vogel

Daniel replies:

But you implicitly admitted it. An adult editor was once encouraging me to leave kiddie books and make big money writing for grown-ups. She said, ""The only difference between what you write now, and adult books is adult books are about human relations and sex."" Just my luck. The two things I know nothing about.

dear daniel-

I was interested in hearing your personal definition of a tchotchke… as well as your favored spelling of this fanciful yiddish word. In fact, I’d love to know what kind of tchotchkes you personally collect and enjoy. (If will encourage you to respond I’ll let you know that I am partial to Grover (from Seseme Street) figurines and M&M dispensers.)

Daniel replies:

It's t-z-z-g-r-a-a-t-z-h-z-z-t-c-h-k-a-i-e-e-e. When the Great Spirit taught the people to hunt the elk, he also gave them the tzzgraatzhzztchkaieee to bring to the aunt, who put it with the other tzzgraatzhzztchkaieees on her coffee table.

hello, again Daniel!

I just wanted to let you know that I just got my copy of 5 Novels in the mail today, and am looking forward to reading all of the stories, especially the ones I haven’t read before. I’m going to London next week, and I plan to start reading the book then.

Thanks for recommending it!

love,

Camilla

P.S. a few weeks ago, when i was still in school, we had to do a project on any book we chose for an end-of-the-year Literature project. I did mine on Lizard Music. While everyone else’s books were about people dying or poor, sad little orphans, mine was about lizards taking over the world! It was a big hit!

Daniel replies:

I like to think about people reading 5 NOVELS on airplanes. I hope you enjoy it.

Hello!

First I have to say (like everyone else here!) that I am a huge fan of your writing, and have been ever since I picked up Alan Mendelsohn back in the third grade (over 19 years ago now). I have become an avid collector of your books, eagerly snatching the new ones up as soon as I find them, since most dim-witted publishers out there seem to put them out of print faster than you can say Yobgorgle. (I think I’m only eight or so books away from a complete collection of all of your books ever published…) I am so pleased that I’ve found this forum- it’s wonderful to know that I’m not the only nutball that enjoys your wonderfully zany work!

However, being the owner of a small independent bookstore, I cringe every time you tell someone to go buy 5 Novels at Amazon.com. Yes, they only charge $8.76, but with shipping it comes to $12.71 for a $10.95 book! Please please, I beg you, do mention that there are thousands of other bookstores out there that, if they don’t have it on hand, will gladly order it in for you in the same amount of time and won’t charge you any extra for the shipping. And if you get really friendly with the staff, you might even be able to convince them to call you every time a new Pinkwater book is published. I know I would!

Please keep on writing. The world needs your books! And I can’t wait for the next novel compilation; I’ve still never even laid eyes on The Worms of Kukumlima, which I’ve heard high praise for.

May the Chicken Man be with you-

Daniel replies:

If someone is lucky enough to live near a real honest-to-goodness old fashioned bookshop, then I hardly need to tell that person to patronize it. There's nothing nicer than a genuine friendly bookstore. But they're practically extinct, and were so before amazon.com. The awful big cube stores killed so many of them. The ones that survive are in perfect locations, and are run by people smart enough, and nice enough, to keep a clientele.

The online store is a big improvement on the mall giant. Amazon.com _will_ tell you when a new book by a favorite author comes out, and even ship it automatically. They have smart editors who study and review new books, and will recommend books based on what you've already purchased.

But...they can't duplicate being in the actual presence of books, being able to browse for real, handle them, and smell them, and they can't provide a big leather chair in which one can sit and read. You have one of those?

Mr. Pinkwater,

I have just read your compilation, 5 Novels. They are very easily five of the best books I have ever read. I have just recently found out that your works stretch out far above the 50 Novels mark. What I was wondering was, who do you get your influences from? I’ve read Alan Mendelsohn and The Snarkout Boys and the Avacado of Death at least 20 times each, and I can’t find a trace of anybody elses influence. It’s completely original and creative. I hope to be a writer and I probably won’t be able to stop what your books have done to my mind from leaking in. Oh, and when are you going to write another Snarkout Boys book? The Avacado of Death is my personal favorite. After 60 books I would be more then tired but you just keep going strong. Thanks for your books, Mr. Pinkwater.

Collin Cable

P.S. My 4 Favorite books used to be Deadeye-Dick, by Kurt Vonnegut, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, To Kill A Mockingbird, Catcher in The Rye, and The Great Gatsby. Then I discovered you. That changed them to: The Avacado of Death, Alan Mendelsohn, Young Adult Novel, and The Baconburg Horror. 4 in a row, congrats.

Daniel replies:

No one, including me, is without influences. I have plenty...so many that I am not going to start listing them now. I am just about done negotiating for another collection, which will include, THE SNARKOUT BOYS AND THE BACONBURG HORROR; THE WORMS OF KUKUMLIMA; YOBGORGLE, MYSTERY MONSTER OF LAKE ONTARIO; and BORGEL. I expect it will be out within a year. I haven't written 50 novels. I hear there are 70 to 80 books, but many of them are picture books and story books.

I'm glad you like my stuff.

I need your advice. My boyfriend’s cat climbs around on my head all day. When I try to remove him, he digs in claws and causes much blood loss and pain. He also eats all my food before I can. What should I do? Kill the cat and tell my boyfriend it was an accident? Get a bigger, meaner cat to do the job for me? Wear a suit of armour in the house? I’ve run out of ideas.

Daniel replies:

Coating your head with regular automotive grease should solve all the problems, and help kitty with hairballs as well.

Good luck.

We are a k-8 school in Paramus, New Jersey and were wondering if you are available for an author visit in our area for the coming school year. The students in our school love your books and so do we lthe school librarians.`

Daniel replies:

Did you mean to type ""we lithe school librarians?"" A novel approach. I have been to Paramus several times, (it was years ago), so I know where it is, and a visit is not quite out of the question--almost, though. You can ask Evan to forward privately an email mentioning the 4-figure honorarium you'd like to offer me.

I am interested in locating a list of your recordings available on C/D or cassette. Is there a reference list available and a location to purchase them? I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Daniel replies:

There are a few out-of-print tapes around from NPR, some from a sleazy outfit called Dove Audio, who don't send out royalty statements, and maybe one, also o-o-p from Bantam. In other words, for most purposes, there aren't any. I plan to discuss this with a publisher, but you have to go very slow or their brains overheat. Meanwhile, people whose local public radio stations carry ""Chinwag Theater"" have been taping rare, out-of-print, and unpublished stuff of mine for over a year. Tell your station to get it for you--doesn't cost them a cent.

What is the proper salutation when you do not know the sex of the person to whom you are writing?

Thanks,

It's ""Hey, you!""

Good morning;

I heard a review youdid on NPR a couple of years ago for a book I believe was call Nina Bonita about a beautiful girl and a rabbit that wanted to be just like her. I’ve been looking for it off and on ever since and have had no luck at all. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about? It sounds like a great book. I’m sure my boys would love it.

Thanks for the wonderful comentary and reviews. I’ll keep listening for more !

Gloria J Suehs

Daniel replies:

I'm pretty sure the publisher of Nina Bonita is Kane Miller Books. They specialize in books from other countries, published in translation, and they have lots of good stuff. Nina Bonita is a very nice book to look at as well.

I was just listening to the download version of this weeks CarTalk when I learned of your existence via Tom and Ray’s snide comments. While I was wondering just who you were, you were so good as to phone in. I wanted to say thank you. You were great fun to listen to. So I went online to Yahoo, typed in your name and your unofficial web site popped up. What a hoot! I must say, I really appreciate both your humor and your corpulence (I hit the CarTalk page and saw you in the black bimmer! What a neat photo) . Have a great day!

Daniel replies:

I think that picture of me and Jacques in the BMW (735i 1985) is on this website too. I just sold it yesterday. I want something even roomier. I have a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Turbodiesel station wagon, and that is very nice. If someone had an even more perfect one than mine, I would consider buying it, or maybe one of those SDL models, great big land yachts.
