My Son Jimmy (age 3) loves your Blue Moose Books. I saw him read books on a new level when he read these — that is the finest tribute to you. However, the books and tapes are out of print.

Any idea of a good source?

Thanks so much for the NPR bits that help us find GOOD books for the kids, especially because you’re missing out on the big Disney endorsement and all.

You could compromise just a bit. How about a D. Pinkwater plush toy! Then there’s the movie, and video game where you blast the aliens, models, beach parties at Bimini, the Weekly World News…

Okay — I get it.

Guess the stretching kid’s minds while making them happy and secure thing works too. Our son Jimmy is certainly happy that you thought up the Blue Moose — I can tell by the thousand questions he asks each time we read about him.

Thanks for doing good things.

Daniel replies:

Is Blue Moose out of print? You sure? I thought there was a Random House paperback of some sort. I should look into this.

Hello, Mister Pinkwater. I saw Norb when I was in the Navy out in L.A. (Long Beach, actually) and loved the strip. that is, when I saw it. I am trying to find it again by reading library microfilm archives, but am daunted by the task. You see, I am not sure of the dates that Norb ran, and I don’t know which paper I saw it in. Do you know which papers ran your strip? If so please tell me. Also would you please tell me the beginning and ending dates?

thank you

andrew krause

Daniel replies:

I actually don't remember the dates! I can't keep track of all the history, pub dates, what's in print and what's not, and keep up with writing the new stuff. I could look it up for you, but I won't. There's a collection of the daily strips around that is probably a rare book by now. If you get one, make sure it has all the pages--the binding is faulty.

Mr. Pinkwater:

I am a freelance writer and am writing a very short biographical piece as an introduction to an excerpt from your book “Fat Men from Space,” which is included in an anthology. The publisher would like to make a connection between the influences on your writing and the concept theme of the unit, which is “Messages from long ago or far away connect us to people and places we might never see.” Would you care to make one of your typical pithy comments?

Years ago, I read several of your books to my son (now aged 28). I still remember our favorite of the book jackets comments about you, something to the effect of this: Mr. Pinkwater and his wife travel extensively, most recently to Iceland, which they hated.”

I would very much appreciate a prompt reply, as I am on a tight deadline. Thanks a lot!

Trish West

Daniel replies:

While I was writing the full-length FAT MEN FROM SPACE all those years ago in Hoboken, New Jersey, the fellow two floors up was sandblasting his brick walls, and the sand filtered down and made a beach of the loft upstairs, and filtered further, and made a sandy mess of mine. Also there was a lot of noise, large objects, like a giant bathtub, being rigged up the side of the building on cables, and there was a water-pipe rupture and flood. Also at this time, someone was suing me--I forget why--it was one of those frivolous nuisance suits. And I had a terrible, terrible flu. In the middle of all this, our favorite cat died. I may have had something in mind when I wrote the book, but if I did, I don't remember it now.

Being fans of PDQ Bach, Douglas Adams and other smart-ass, sarcastic-type artists, it was no surprise that when my five-year old daughter brought home Ice Cream Larry, we would fall in love with Daniel and Jill Pinkwater’s work!

Your childrens books are a welcome relief from the cloying sweetness of most kids books and yet are endearing in their own right (to smart-ass, sarcastic readers like us :). We look forward to reading more and more and if you are ever a little further south in the Hudson Valley (like Rockland County), we would love to have you read at our school!

Thank you for the laughs!

Daniel replies:

I must take exception. I am not a smart-ass sarcastic artist. I am a sweet and engaging artist. I am a smart-ass sarcastic person.

hi daniel, i heard your show where you were talking about the delicious baklava in new york made by an iranian man.

well, in seattle there is a place with INCREDIBLE baklava, the best ever – not too sweet, green , and very rich. it is absolutely delicious and a taste sensation (haha)

if you ever come to seattle, you should consider going to the Sahara Restaurant in the U district – it’s on University Way NE in seattle (just 5 or 10 minutes north of downtown) , so check it out !!

now i am not an employee there, i don’t know the owner or anything weird like that. i am just a fellow baklava and pre socratic connoisseur.

thanks,

wendy 🙂

Daniel replies:

The program you refer to is Chinwag Theater, heard in quite a few places. (Isn't it neat that I have what looks like a career, publications, fans, my own radio program, and all the trimmings, but none of it is planned or terribly profitable, or so big that it stops being fun for me?). I will keep your baklava tip in mind.

lauren

ps.once again i have monopolized your question board

pps what breed is your horse?

have you ever danced in a ballet?Im fritz, chinese,

mouse, snow, kid, angel, and several others in a local production of the

nutcracker.

lauren.again. whoopee for you. i

laugh at your terror to see that ive asked a question yet again.

Daniel replies:

My favorite ice cream flavor is split pea. My favorite cartoon show is the NBC Evening News. I haven't listened to Weird Al for 20 years since I moved and didn't know what station Dr. Demento was on. Our horse is named Lokkur, he's a 33-year-old Icelandic horse. (Find, and read, Cloud Horse by Jill Pinkwater--a great horse book, maybe the best ever written). I had to leave the ballet...I don't want to talk about it.

I’ve been in search of a copy of Borgel for 2 years now. No, that’s a lie. I’ve been in search of 5 copies. After passing a library copy around the car to read aloud during a lengthy road trip (a perfect story for this I might add), my 3 daughters, their father and I all fell in head over heels.

Aside from making us laugh so hard we hurt, it has such an incredible way of describing how love can’t be destroyed. Two years ago, I thought I might surprise them all (and myself) for Christmas with copies of this special book, but the surprise was on me. Not only was it out of print, but the few copies that could be found through used book outlets were priced beyond what I could afford.

With this being the case, is there any chance of another edition being printed? We’re not collectors of rare books, merely people who know a good read and don’t want to lose it!

Sincerely heartbroken,

Nancy Morrison

Daniel replies:

4 Fantastic Novels, which will appear in spring 2000 from Simon and Schuster contains Borgel, also Yobgorgle Mystery Monster of Lake Ontario, The Worms of Kukumlima, and The Snarkout Boys and the Baconburg Horror, all for one low price! So there! And the previously out of print Fishwhistle, and Chicago Days Hoboken Nights, retitled Hoboken Fish and Chicago Whistle, is available from Xlibris (order through amazon.com or http://www.xlibris.com ), as is The Afterlife Diet. You may now do a little dance of joy.

Dear Mr. Pinkwater,

When I was nine and in fourth grade, I was inspired…. no, that’s not quite the right word – I was haunted by your writings. Now, twenty-one years later, I’m a fourth grade teacher who relishes the moment when I can introduce my students to your books so that they may be haunted (I mean inspired) too.

My question is about Lizard Music. In 1976, Victor’s hero was Walter Cronkite. If that story had been written in 1999, who would his modern-day heroes have been? Any thoughts of a revision? I mean they did it with the Bible!

Sincerely,

Richard Upright

Daniel replies:

In fact, I am supposed to hand in a sequel to Lizard Music in time for publication in, I guess, spring of 2001. And, no, I have no clue--I thought I did when I accepted the check. Now, no.

Oh Great One Oh Handsome One Oh Captain My Captain:

I am located at eagle.clarion.edu/~student/s_brose/

I love your books you are indeed the one and by the way I found a Ribbon on a site (the address eludes me i shall send later)

it is indeed the Pinkwater Author of the Millennium Award it is quite nice

Yours in good health (which mine is decidedly not at the moment)

Ben The Librarian also known as Son of George

www.webgurus.com/matic/view-entry.cgi?id=35826

this is the address of the pinkwater ribbon i found it says it was placed there by captain shep nesterman

dunno

anyway

thought youd injoy this My Good sir

yours sincerely,

Ben the Librarian

PS I found it listed under the category free speech

Daniel replies:

I wear my adornments on my soul. Honors mean nothing to me, (except maybe the large gold-painted pot-metal medal with a bas-relief of some guy wearing goggles I was given by Bard College in May of 1999. I like this one because it is quite large, and you can wear it around your neck like Reverend Al Sharpton, and it might protect you from an assassin's bullet. Your father has a similar one, only his is first-class, and came with a certificate entitling him to a salami sandwich and a glass of beer).

Dear Mr. Pinkwater

I’m doing a report on you while reading the snarkout boys and the avocodo of death. I would to have some information of its not to much trouble. My report is is do 11-19-99.

Daniel replies:

And here it is, the 21st, and by now you've handed in your report without any help from me. However, if for some reason, it's not too late, here is a piece of information you can't get from anyone but me. My father found a rich vein of halvah in the Rocky Mountains, and operated a halvah mine until cheap imported halvah knocked the bottom out of the market--this is why I am independently wealthy and can afford to be a writer.

Daniel-

It’s me Catie Mcley. Here are the questions my class and I came up with.

  • How did you get your website?
  • How many sculptures did you make?
  • Which story do you like?
  • Where do you get your characters’ names?
  • Did you like sculpting alot? Why or why not?
  • Have you ever had a caldecott? If so what was the tittle of it.
  • Do you have any children? If so, how many, and how old are they?

    When is your b-day?

  • How many books have you written?
  • How do you get your tittles so they don’t tell too much?
  • Do you have anouther job beside writting?
  • Are you working on anouther book right now? If so what’s the tittle?

From:

Catie Mcley & my classmates

Daniel replies:

Here are the answers, in order:

  • It isn't my website. A fellow named Alieron started it, and Evan runs it now. I like it, don't you?
  • 3I like all stories, except maybe ones by me.
  • I ask them.
  • I liked making sculptures, but people who saw them said I stunk.
  • Yes, I have bought several books that won Caldecotts.
  • No.
  • Nov. 15
  • 80?
  • I spend hours and hours on it.
  • Nope! Just write!
  • Just finished one: The Magic Pretzel. It's about werewolves.

I wrote asking for advice about a problem with a cat before. Now I have a different problem with different cats. These cats belong to my landlord. They just came over one day and stayed. Every night just after the lights go out they play this game they made up. It involves a lot of meowing followed by frenzied chasing, is very loud, and can last for hours before they get tired and try to sleep in our bed. As far as I can tell it’s something between Marco Polo and hide and seek. After they finish playing they crawl under my blankets and sniff my feet. I can’t sleep. I never hated cats before. What would you do?

Daniel replies:

I'd consider negotiating for a reduction in rent. By the way, you seem to be quoted on the back cover of 4 Fantastic Novels, forthcoming from Simon and Schuster.

Robert Marrow

November 13, 1999

Dear Mr. Pinkwater,

What ever happened to Manus and the sculptures or owls left in the woods?

Robert Marrow, Bard College ‘ 62

PS I so love your conversations with Scott Simon that I have to sit in the car waiting in the driveway until they are finished, even if I’m in a hurry. There should be a collection on tape. Obviously the voices, the attempted accents and the good natured laughter could not be captured on the page. Do you remember Jeffrey Marlin, “Manus, how do you find yourself this morning?” Manus, “With a string, sir.” A great beginning.

Daniel replies:

I remember everything. Actually, I am a master of mimicry, but purposely louse up my rendition of accents so as not to embarrass Scott Simon.
