Hi Daniel,

My first introduction to science fiction was with Alan Mendelsohn, The Boy From Mars. I read it when I was twelve, and it started off my career in reading SF. 25 years and several thousand books later, I had been reorganizing my collection when I came across my original copy of the book. I read it again this afternoon, and it still made me laugh out loud.

The book will never, ever leave my bookshelf. If The Singularity ever happens and I get to upload myself, that book is coming with me! It was a pivotal event in my life, so thanks for writing it!

Yours,

–Robert Baruch

Daniel replies:

Thank you. I wish I had known more about writing when I wrote it. But I'll probably write it again some time. Meanwhile, I hope you're checking out The Neddiad, on this site.

Hiya, DMP&J,

Bettcha been wondering what ever happened to Ol’ Donald from

your Huntington Days. No? Weel, I’ll have you know I have been

telling Pinkwater stories all over the Big Sleezy. One of my good

friends is Colleen Sally, a retired teacher of children’s literature

and who reads to the little bastards on occasion. When I told her

that I once knew you, she was both thrilled and mortified. I had

a letter from you (actually, it was MY letter with your corrections

on it) which I shared with her. She has taught from most of your

books and is a guru of the genre. All things considered, I am very

happy I discovered this site on my trusty Apple. Someday I’ll get

a computer. I seldom listen to that commie, liberal, unamerican

radio trash NPR. Even though I am retired (for the past 12 years)

I have beter things to do with my time. Such as singing in local

clubs, taking lots of photographs, ad painting. Glad to know

you are both well and even more productive. Give me an E-Mail

if you have the time or the simple humanity of bringing joy to

an old man who figured so pointedly in your undeserved career.

Donald Waits

My stage name is now “Mad Dog”

PS: I went to the rest of your web pages and thre is far too much information for me to stomach. Thanks, anywho…..Shall I send you a CD?

Daniel replies:

No thanks. Avoiding sensory overload.

I’m a micro publisher and just put out my first children’s book. The author, Jerry, is wild keen to have you read it. Can I ship you a copy?

Madeleine Claire and the Dinosaur is on Amazon, though they haven’t done the “Look Inside The Book” thing yet. I really thought this sucker would be out long before Christmas, but printer, binder, shipper, oy.

Love your stuff. If I weren’t grown up I would probably consider being you when I was. Seems like great and serious fun.

Daniel replies:

Sure, send it, and good luck with it!

For some years, probably at least twenty, I have intended to tell you that one of your NPR broadcasts had a lasting impact on me. Do you remember a story you told saying that you had to search for a dog with “eyes like Juno”? Being a doggie person, I knew just what you meant, and have remembered the story. Now, shortly I will have to search for a dog with eyes like Clarabelle. And like Juno, I’m sure.

Daniel replies:

Actually, I don't remember, but it sounds right. You'll find yourself looking into those eyes--I am absolutely sure.

Zombie Chicken Alert! Petaluma, California. Long a hotbed of radical Jewish chicken farmers, is now the home of zombie chickens. The market for spent hen meat has collapsed and so farmers are euthanizing gobs of unwanted hen chickens and plowing them into fields and covering them with sawdust. Chicken compost. The problem these chickens do not stay dead, but emerge from the sawdust like feathered George Romero extras. But don’t believe me, click on this Santa Rosa Press Democrat story:

Donky Puncharello,

I just wanted to thank you for writing books. I’m a twenty-two year old whose had a very wide range of experiences and many good times…still there is one persistent clump of memory…its really mostly a feeling…a really good one…that is always a part of me…which was created by the combination of reading Lizard Music and Borgel and listening to the radio as a child. There are several mental images of the way I imagined the content of the books and attached feelings that arise everytime I hear Ordinary World, by Duran Duran. If you hadn’t written those books I would totally not be me…so thanks again for the cookies.

Daniel replies:

Most welcome!

Do you happen to know a link to the wonderfull “Rabbit Ears Radio Theater” series? Does NPR or anybody else sell audio files from it? Thanks.

Daniel replies:

Rabbit Ears stopped production a few years back. Suddenly. Various public radio stations were bugged. No idea where or if copies are available.

Heard you on NPR talking about the mysterious veggie at Chinese Rest. in Red Hook. Have been to Red Hook, and never heard of “Golden Wok”…sounds interesting. Plan to be up there again over Thanksgiving weekend. Where exactly is it? Like to give it a try. Also, are they open Xmas Day?…I’m Jewish, and that’s my tradition!

Daniel replies:

It's right in the middle of town. Call them up and ask them if they're open Christmas. Nice people.

Hello Mr. Pinkwater,

I am 12 years old and I was fascinated when I read Looking for Bobowicz. It was so funny at times and it sometimes took time to figure certain things out really quick. I just wanted to know what-if any-book came after Looking for Bobowicz in a series.

With all due respect thank you very much for reading my note.

Your buddy,

Assheam

Daniel replies:

After Looking for Bobowicz comes The Artsy Smartsy Club. Thanks for asking.

Would you consider writing a book about

my elf friends that live in Iceland ?

thanks,

Hal

ps elves are more important in Iceland than just about any place else.

Daniel replies:

I knew that some Icelanders eat horses, but elves?

hello mr. pinkwater

my name is erin brenner, Iam 12 years old and the book that you wrote tha caught my attention was “borgle” I am upset that it is not in print anymore and that I don’t own it. it is hilarious I read it when I saw it in the teen section at my library an dI read it to my cousins and they loved it too! I love the idea of all of borgle belongings being in a suit case I have thought of doing that my self it is so organized how does borgle know what is in each suitcase and not get them mixed up?! I love your dog lulu she is sooo cute I wish that I had a dog I have been begging my parents for a while but no such luck…:( oh well here is the point of my letter I am writing letters to various authorsand seeing how many that I get replys from you are the third author that I have wriiten to. lisa papademetriou was number 2 and I forget number one (he he) I will copy, paste and print your reply when it comes up on your forum I know you said that all letters do not show up but I am a very persistant and stubborn person and I will keep writing untill you write back. Also I hope you read this and not mr. salami man (no offence mr. salami man) please write more than a couple sentances I would be honnered if I could add your letter to my collection. thank you very much mr. pinkwater!

with all due respect,

Erin Brenner

Daniel replies:

Erin -- Borgel is in print! It is included in the paperback anthology 4 FANTASTIC NOVELS from Simon and Schuster. And you get 3 other novels with it, all for less that you would have paid for Borgel alone! Cool, no? There is another collection called 5 NOVELS. Same deal. There is nothing wrong with being a very persistant and stubborn person. Thank you for writing.

i have read many of your books, one of my favorites are lizard Music and The Artsy Smartsy Club, but i have noticed flaw. In The Hoboken Chicken Emergency, you refer to Professor Mazzocchi’s first name as Fritz, but in Looking for Bobowicz, his first name is sterling.

Thank you from an avid reader——–3.141…

Daniel replies:

Has it occurred to you that Mazzochi might have been lying in one book or the other?

I have just read the latest chapter of The Neddiad and I must tell you, you had me in greatest suspense. You are a master!

I love reading this serially but be assured, I will be at my favorite independent book sellers in April to buy the whole thing to read again & again.

Daniel replies:

Didn't you guide me around Chicago, and protect me from harm during the Printer's Row bookfair 10 or more years ago?
